It appears the Calgary Flames may be looking for some more goaltending. The bottom line is there a feeling that the Flames could be trying to acquire a more experienced netminder as Dustin Wolf of Gilroy, California has only played 74 career games in the NHL and Devin Cooley of Los Gatos, California has only played six career NHL games. The Flames also have Ivan Prosvetov of Moscow, Russia in the mix, but he did not have a good preseason according to Eric Francis of Rogers Sportsnet and is currently playing with the Calgary Wranglers of the American Hockey League.
Wolf has been OK
In his first game of the 2025-26 National Hockey League regular season, Wolf was fantastic, especially in the shootout, in a 4-3 Flames win over the Edmonton Oilers a week ago.
The next night, Wolf might have started if the Flames had an experienced backup. On the second of back-to-back nights, Wolf looked very lethargic as he was completely outplayed by fellow Californian Thatcher Demko of San Diego, California in a 5-1 Flames loss to the Vancouver Canucks. Then less than 48 hours later, Wolf was in between the pipes again as the Flames played their home opener. The Flames were the better team in the first 20 minutes, but were outplayed by the St. Louis Blues thereafter in a 4-2 loss.
Wolf in 2025-26
The Calder Trophy runner-up has a record of one win and two losses after three games to date. He has a goals against average of 3.99 and a save percentage of .865. Wolf also leads the NHL with 12 goals against.
Devin Cooley
With Wolf getting the start on Tuesday in the Flames home game against the Vegas Golden Knights, I would be absolutely stunned if he started the second game of a back-to-back on Wednesday in Utah. Even if Cooley is great against Vegas at home, Â I think the Flames coaching staff learned their lesson from last week.
The issues with Cooley are experience and productivity. In six career games with the San Jose Sharks two seasons ago, he had a goals against average of 4.98 and a save percentage of .870. These are not numbers that do not keep you in the NHL.
What goalie could be Calgary bound?
If the Flames are looking for a goalie with experience, there are three available according to Rupert McDonald of The Hockey Writers. They are James Reimer, Ville Husso, and Joonas Korpisalo. My feeling is that Flames general manager Craig Conroy may be actually be patient with Cooley unless he looks completely out of place. That is because Reimer, Husso, and Korpisalo are past their prime.
