Former World No. 4 ATP player Holger Rune is 22 years old, but he has already changed coaches many times. Among his most famous former coaches are Boris Becker and Patrick Mouratoglou.
Rune has five career ATP titles but has never gotten past the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament. The lofty expectations associated with him just a couple of years ago positioned him as part of this generation’s Big 3 with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
That’s why it is very interesting that as the US Open hardcourt series heats up next week at the Mubadala Citi Open in Washington, DC, Holger Rune is working with an American tennis legend and a former five-time champion in DC.
Andre Agassi has been spotted on the court with Rune. The relationship is to-be-determined. Some are calling it a mentorship; others a three-day trial in the days before the DC main draw. If three days is the current term, it is unclear what could be implemented in that timespan. Perhaps it is a chemistry test to see if the two could work together.

The longterm plan could morph into a remote or occasional travel arrangement with Kenneth Carlsen and Lars Christensen who have worked with Rune on and off throught the years and are still officially members of his team.
There is no doubt that Agassi can help Rune. He is young and developing player. Injuries have been an issue for him, but he has a formidable game. In 2025, he was a finalist at Indian Wells losing to Jack Draper in straight sets. Rune rebounded from that disappointing result and defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the Barcelona Open final a month later.
Holger Rune’s Mubadala Citi Open draw will be revealed on Saturday, July 19 with main draw play beginning on Monday, July 21. The combined ATP and WTA 500 tournament will be broadcast live from July 21-27 on the Tennis Channel.
