It was all smiles between friends and American compatriots Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz on Thursday, December 4, 2025 at the Charlotte Invitational exhibition.
The pair have known and played each other for approximately half of their lives. While there were plenty of laughs, there were also impressive rallies and great shotmaking. It came down to a ten point tiebreaker after they split the first two sets.

Tiafoe enters 2026 after a disappointing 2025 season. He has a new team and renewed hopes to get back to the Top 15; he is now ranked 30th.
Fritz comes into 2026 as the top ranked American, but he was not able to duplicate his 2024 US Open finals appearance.
The American men have the burden of trying to win the first Grand Slam since 2003 when Andy Roddick won the US Open. They have the additional pressure of figuring out how to solve the Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz puzzle. Those two dominated the sport in 2025.

An added entertaining feature of the men’s exhibition that did not happen in the earlier match between Madison Keys and Venus Williams was that Charlotte athletes grabbed a racquet and played a few points.

Charlotte is a city that wants to have a presence on the tennis landscape. This is evidenced by the packed stadium. Enthusiastic fans had signs and offered plenty of support for all four Americans in both matches.
