Frank Ragnow ends retirement, rejoins Detroit Lions

All-Pro center Frank Ragnow, who retired this past June, is returning to the Detroit Lions, a major interior-line reinforcement as the club pushes for the playoffs.

Frank Ragnow’s time away from the field lasted just five months. On November 26, 2025, sources confirmed that the former four-time Pro Bowler and perennial All-Pro center is ending his retirement and rejoining the Detroit Lions.

Ragnow retired in June, citing health and family as his priorities after a seven-season run during which he started 96 regular-season games for Detroit.

But now, with the Lions sitting at 7–4 and competing for a playoff berth, the lure of unfinished business has brought him back.

According to reports, he is physically ready to play, a key consideration given his injury history. Among the toughest linemen in the league, Ragnow overcame a fractured throat, pectoral issues, and chronic toe problems over his career.

Why this return matters now

The Lions’ offensive line, once lauded as a strength, has shown cracks in pass protection during Ragnow’s absence. With starting center Graham Glasgow handling snaps, the pocket has been less stable, a critical problem for a team trying to balance a playoff push with physical wear-and-tear over the season’s second half.

Bringing back Ragnow injects not just talent but leadership and familiarity.

His presence could restore cohesion up front, improve both run and pass blocking, and reduce the pressure on the quarterback,  elements that often make the difference in close games down the stretch.

Moreover, with the Lions in the thick of the NFC North and playoff picture, timing could not be better. Ragnow’s return might swing Detroit’s late-season outlook, especially if he can return to near-elite form.

What to watch and possible limitations

Despite the optimism, there are caveats. It’s still unclear exactly when Ragnow will be activated or whether he will immediately reclaim the starting center spot from Glasgow.

History suggests that midseason un-retirements often require ramp-up: snapping timing, communication with guards, and regaining stamina can take time, especially for interior linemen. Given Ragnow’s injury history, how quickly he acclimates will be critical.

There’s also the broader question: can Detroit’s offense rebound quickly? The offensive line is more than one player; run blocking cohesion, guard play, and quarterback comfort all matter. Ragnow’s presence improves the odds, but the Lions still need consistent execution across the board.

If Ragnow returns to 90–95% of his former level, Detroit’s offensive line could shift from liability to strength, making their push for the division and a deep playoff run far more credible.
