Franz Wagner’s Injury Puts Magic In A Tough Position Moving Forward

Through 24 games, the Magic are 14-10, good for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Orlando is 7-3 over its last 10 and is coming off a 106-100 loss to the Knicks on Sunday.

Late in the first quarter of that game, Magic SF Franz Wagner suffered an injury. His knee buckled after he went up for an alley-oop and was fouled by New York. Wagner was helped to the locker room and did not return for the Magic. The 24-year-old has been the team’s most consistent player so far this year. Orlando cannot afford for Franz Wagner to miss extended time.

The Magic are waiting for the results of Franz Wagner’s MRI

On December 6, 2024, Franz Wagner suffered a torn oblique. He was forced to miss 20 consecutive games for the Magic. Wagner made a full recovery and started 60 games for the team in 2024-25. While the team has various injuries to begin 2025-26, Franz Wagner has kept the team contending. He’s started all 24 games this season. One year and one day after he tore his oblique, Franz Wagner suffered another injury for the Magic.

In the first quarter vs. the Knicks on Sunday, Franz Wagner’s knee buckled. He was in significant pain and did not return to the game. NBA insiders reported that Wagner underwent an MRI on Sunday evening. The results of that MRI have not been made available to the public. Based on what we saw on Sunday, one could expect Wagner to miss extended time for Orlando.

Franz Wagner’s 22.7 points per game in 2025-26 lead the team. Paolo Banchero missed time early in the year due to injury. In that time, Wagner was the team’s #1 scoring option. Banchero will now have to step up and take over that role again. He is more than capable of doing that for the team despite his rough shooting numbers early on.

If Franz Wagner misses extended time for the Magic, the team has depth. When Paolo Banchero missed 10 consecutive games for Orlando, Tristan da Silva started at PF. Head coach Jamal Mosley will likely start da Silva at SF if Wagner is out. Additionally, the team has Anthony Black as an elite role player off the bench. He can fill some of the offensive void when Franz Wagner is not on the court. Orlando will play the Heat on Tuesday in the knock-out stage of the Emirates NBA Cup.
