LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier throws the ball.

The 2025 season for the LSU Tigers will come down to quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and the severity of his injury. LSU head coach Brian Kelly shared a positive update about Nussmeier’s health.

Is Garrett Nussmeier’s Injury A Concern For LSU?

Countless LSU fans suffered panic attacks earlier this week after rumors of a Nussmeier injury went viral. The LSU quarterback was shaken up at practice this week, leaving many fans to believe Nussmeier suffered a torn ACL.

Many LSU reporters, including Wilson Alexander, downplayed the injury concerns, reporting that Nussmeier did not suffer a major injury. Still, many LSU fans continued to picture the worst-case scenario ahead of the college football season.

Kelly finally ended any speculation about a serious injury when he spoke to the media on Friday.

“Just for the record, he [Nussmeier] has tendinitis, patellar tendinitis,” Kelly said via Matt Moscona. “He does not have a torn ACL. We have not amputated his leg.”

Kelly described the injury as a “PO’d patellar tendon.” The head coach expects his quarterback to return to practice very soon.

“He [Nussmeier] was out there today throwing. Tomorrow, he’ll be back out, most likely in a practice situation,” Kelly explained. “So, I thought we’d calm everybody down.”

According to Kelly, Nussmeier “planted the wrong way,” which aggravated his preexisting condition. Kelly stressed that Nussmeier aggravated the knee but did not tear it. How would Kelly rank the severity of the injury?

“On the scale of 1 to 10, this is like a 1.5, on the scale of 1 to 10,” Kelly said. “And that’s just being honest with you so we get the right information out there, you know, regarding Nuss. It’s not a serious injury. And it’s like guys dealing with tendinitis virtually every day in life. Take two aspirins, and I’ll call you in the morning, right? This is more precautionary.”

LSU Tigers Have Their Eyes On The College Football Playoff

Make no mistake, Nussmeier is the most important player on the LSU Tigers. If Nussmeier misses time due to injury, LSU’s season could go down the drain.

Last year, Nussmeier threw for the fifth-most passing yards in the nation with 4,052 in his first season as the starter. Nussmeier led the Tigers to a 9-4 record, capped off by a 44-31 win over Baylor in the Texas Bowl.

If LSU wins nine games and plays in the Texas Bowl this season, it will be considered a massive disappointment.

ESPN has LSU fourth in its SEC rankings. LSU will have the edge at quarterback in the majority of its games, as Nussmeier enters 2025 as a Heisman Trophy candidate. The redshirt senior is also projected to be a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

We will know a lot about Nussmeier’s health right away as LSU battles Clemson on Aug. 30.
