Geno Smith Injured: Will Seahawks QB Be Ready For Week 1?

The quarterback carousel has taken another turn before the start of free agency. The Seattle Seahawks are trading Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Geno Smith Traded To The Raiders

Per NFL Network’s Insiders, the Seahawks are sending Smith to the Raiders for a 2025 third-round pick.

It’s a reunion in Las Vegas, as Smith will play for new Raiders head coach Pete Carroll, who coached the quarterback in Seattle for five seasons.

After serving as Russell Wilson’s backup for three seasons, Smith became the starter ahead of the 2022 season.

Smith had his best season as a pro, throwing for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a league-high 69.8% completion rate.

Smith led the Seahawks to a surprising playoff berth and received the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.

During the 2023 offseason, Smith signed a three-year, $75 million contract.

Smith threw for a career-high 4,320 yards in 2024. The 34-year-old also threw for 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Quarterback Situations In Las Vegas And Seattle

The Raiders now have their starting quarterback in 2025 with Smith.

Las Vegas desperately needed a new signal caller. Last season’s trio of Gardner Minshew, Aidan O’Connell, and Desmond Ridder guided the team to a 4-13 record.

Vegas was one of two teams to express interest in Matthew Stafford before the former Super Bowl champion re-signed with the Los Angeles Rams.

Smith is not a permanent solution. However, Smith does give Vegas a high-end bridge quarterback.

The Raiders could still draft a top quarterback if someone like Shedeur Sanders falls to their pick at No. 6.

By trading Smith, Seattle is hitting the reset button at quarterback.

The trade comes days before the start of free agency, so expect Seattle to be active next week.

Sam Darnold is one of the quarterbacks the Seahawks could be interested in.
