Gerard Butler stands with two people in Greenland 2: Migration.

Gerard Butler returns to headline an action sequel in Greenland 2: Migration. Can Butler’s star power propel the box office to a respectable opening weekend?

What is Greenland 2: Migration about?

John Garrity (Butler) and his family managed to survive the comet that wiped out most of Earth’s population by hiding in the Greenland safety bunkers.

10 years later, John, his wife, Allison (Morena Baccarin), and their son, Nathan (Roman Griffin Davis), are still alive thanks to those survival bunkers. Unfortunately, the place that they call home is no longer safe.

After learning about a potential safe zone in southern France, the trio embarks on a dangerous adventure across a barren wasteland to find a new home.

The action-packed movie depicts a chaotic world with comet strikes, tidal waves, and explosions.

No matter the force that gets in his way, John is committed to protecting his family.

“I’ll take care of you both ’til my last breath,” John tells his family.

Greenland 2: Migration’s cast also includes Amber Rose Revah, Gordon Alexander, Peter Polycarpou, William Abadie, and Tommie Earl Jenkins.

Ric Roman Waugh directs Greenland 2: Migration from a screenplay by Mitchell LaFortune and Chris Sparling.

Greenland 2: Migration opens in theaters on January 9, 2026.

Greenland 2: Migration is an interesting test case in Butler’s box office prowess.

Released in December 2020, Greenland grossed $52.3 million on a $30 million budget. Considering COVID-19 kept people away from the theaters, the fact that Greenland became a small hit was impressive.

Now, Greenland 2: Migration receives a January release date, which is when films typically don’t break out to become gigantic hits.

Last January, Butler starred in Den of Thieves 2: Panterawhich grossed $58.4 million on a $40 million budget. Again, another small win for Butler.

Greenland 2: Migration is tracking for a domestic opening between $8 million and $10 million. However, the Polymarket odds suggest it will climb north of $13.5 million.

With an estimated budget of $90 million, Greenland 2: Migration will need serious legs in the theaters, especially from an international audience, to become profitable.

Greenland 2: Migration won’t be the No. 1 movie at the box office. That will likely be Avatar: Fire and Ash in its fourth weekend.

Second place will be a battle between Greenland 2: Migration and Primate, a horror movie with similar tracking numbers to Butler’s epic.
