Atlanta Hawks Interested In Extending CJ McCollum After Trae Young Trade

The Atlanta Hawks reportedly have discussed the idea of offering newly acquired guard CJ McCollum a one-year contract extension worth around $20 million, according to Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com.

Wizards Traded CJ McCollum To Hawks

McCollum, who was traded to Atlanta along with Corey Kispert in Tuesday’s deal that sent Trae Young to the Washington Wizards, is earning $30.67 million in 2025-26, the final season of his current deal.

Per Spotrac, Young has $95 million total remaining on his five-year, $215.15 million rookie max extension, with this season and next season. His deal includes a $48.96 million player option for 2026-27.

Moving Young provides the Hawks with financial flexibility for a potential one-year extension for McCollum and/or a mega trade involving Dallas Mavericks star center Anthony Davis.

According to Afseth, the Hawks view McCollum as a complementary ball-handler and scorer alongside the team’s young core. The team wanted him for his ability to play both on and off the ball, Afseth noted.

McCollum was selected 10th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2013 draft out of Lehigh University. He spent 8½ seasons with Portland before he was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans at the February 2022 deadline.

McCollum Has Stayed Healthy

In 56 games (all starts) with the Pelicans last season, McCollum averaged 21.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 32.7 minutes per contest while shooting 44.4% from the floor and 37.3% from 3-point range.

McCollum, Yves Missi, and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl were the only three players on the roster in 2024-25 to have played more than 60 games, per Basketball Reference.

During the offseason, New Orleans sent McCollum, Kelly Olynyk, and a future second-round pick to Washington for Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey, and the No. 40 pick in the 2025 NBA draft.

Olynyk was subsequently dealt to the San Antonio Spurs.

In 35 appearances (all starts) with the Wizards this season, McCollum averaged 18.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 30.9 minutes per game while shooting 45.4% from the field and 39.3% from deep.

He scored a season-high 46 points in Washington’s 132-113 home win over the Hawks on Nov. 25.
