With only two months left in 2025, what movie will be the highest-grossing at the domestic box office? Two upcoming releases, Wicked: For Good and Avatar: Fire and Ash, could shake up the race and wind up on top.

So far, 2025 belongs to Warner Bros. The legacy studio has three of the top five highest-grossing movies at the domestic box office.
A Minecraft Movie sits at the top of the list with a $423.9 million gross. The movie became a cultural phenomenon upon its release in April thanks to a savvy marketing strategy, memeable moments (“Chicken jockey!”), and bankable kid stars like Jack Black and Jason Momoa.
A Minecraft Movie grossed $162.8 million in its opening weekend, the highest of 2025.
Warner’s other two top movies are Superman, which ranks third at $354.1 million, and Sinners, which sits in fifth at $278.6 million. These three movies surpassed a combined $1 billion at the domestic box office.
The second-highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office this year is Lilo & Stitch. The live-action remake of the Disney animated classic grossed $423.8 million.
Lilo & Stitch is the only American film to have grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Jurassic World Rebirth, Universal’s reboot of the Jurassic World franchise, is the fourth-highest-grossing domestic movie, with $339.6 million.

Not much time remains between now and 2026. However, there are still two huge projects yet to be released in theaters.
The first is Wicked: For Good, Jon M. Chu’s highly anticipated sequel to 2024’s Wicked. For Good is the second half of the two-part adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical.
Originally positioned as a risky project, Wicked became an overwhelming success for Universal. Released in November of 2024, Wicked grossed $473.2 million at the domestic box office. If Wicked: For Good repeats the success of its predecessor, it will top the 2025 domestic box office.
Wicked: For Good sees the returns of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, who now embrace their identities as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, respectively.
Wicked: For Good opens in theaters on November 21, 2025.
In December, James Cameron invites the audience back to Pandora for a third time in Avatar: Fire and Ash. The third movie in the Avatar franchise will continue the adventures of Jake Sully and his family as they navigate a new section of Pandora occupied by the villainous Ash People.
Never doubt Cameron at the box office. Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion) are the first and third highest-grossing movies of all time.
At the domestic box office, The Way of Water grossed $688.4 million.
