New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin of Mezhdurechensk, Russia has displayed some spectacular goaltending lately. He is red hot for the month of December as he has won five straight games.
Sorokin’s December statistics
Sorokin has a goals against average of 1.94 and a save percentage of .942 for December. He opened the month by giving up one goal on 31 shots in a 2-1 Islanders win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on December 2. That was followed by giving up three goals on 38 shots in a 6-3 Islanders win over the Colorado Avalanche on December 4, a 32 save shutout in a 2-0 Islanders win over the Lightning on December 6, a 5-4 Islanders shootout win over the Vegas Golden Knights on December 9, and a 3-2 Islanders shootout win over the Lightning on Saturday.

The Golden Knights, Avalanche and Lightning are all among the elite teams in the NHL. Sorokin has beat all three of these teams in December and the Lightning thrice. Vegas, Colorado and Tampa Bay have all won at least one Stanley Cup this decade, and they all lead their respective divisions this season.

This is the second straight month where Sorokin has been stellar. He made 33 saves in a 5-0 Islanders win over the New York Rangers on November 8, and 29 saves in a 5-0 Islanders win over the Detroit Red Wings on November 20. Sorokin is second in the NHL in shutouts. Only Jesper Wallstedt of Vasteras, Sweden has more shutouts as he has four shutouts with the Minnesota Wild.
