Mike Tomlin has been the Steelers’ head coach since 2007. He has won a Super Bowl with Pittsburgh and holds the NFL record for most consecutive non-losing seasons to begin a coaching career (18).
Tomlin has led the Steelers to 12 playoff appearances. However, he has not won a playoff game since 2016.
He is the longest-tenured active head coach in the league.
There is no doubt that Tomlin will one day be in the NFL Hall of Fame.
Despite all this, it is time for the Pittsburgh Steelers to move on from Mike Tomlin, finally.
It Is Time For The Steelers To Move On From Mike Tomlin
Mike Tomlin is leading the highest-paid defense in the NFL this season. Do not let it fool you, Teryl Austin is the defensive coordinator in name only. This is Mike Tomlin’s defense.
The highest-paid defense has been abysmal this season. This defense has allowed a season high of passing yards to four consecutive QBs:
- Jordan Love (360 passing yards)
- Joe Flacco (342 passing yards)
- Dillon Gabriel (221 passing yards)
- Carson Wentz (350 passing yards)
Besides Jordan Love, the other three QBs who have roasted the Steelers’ defense are backup QBs. Flacco started the year for Cleveland, was benched, and then traded to the Bengals after Jake Browning struggled. Dillon Gabriel was Flacco’s backup in Cleveland. Carson Wentz is the backup QB for the Vikings.
This is also the same defense that allowed the Jets to score 32 points in week 1. Sam Darnold and the Seahawks had their way with the Steelers’ defense in week 2.
Pittsburgh’s defense has allowed more than 30 points in four of seven games this season.
Where Is T.J. Watt?
The Steelers chose to give Watt a new deal instead of trading him before the season began. The wrong pass rusher was dealt before the season started. Instead of Dallas trading Micah Parsons, the Steelers should have traded Watt.
Watt has been non-existent this season. He has four sacks through seven games. However, two of them came in one game against the Patriots. Watt recorded one sack against an awful Vikings’ offensive line. He recorded 0.5 sacks against the Browns and 0.5 sacks against the Bengals.
Watt is a big reason for the Steelers’ lack of success on defense. He is unable to get pressure the way he used to.
This was just a bad call by the Steelers for keeping him.
The Steelers Will Not Win A Playoff Game
Pittsburgh has not won a playoff game since 2016. By the looks of it, they will once again fail to win a playoff game.
At this rate, with the way their defense is playing, the Steelers may not even make the playoffs, despite the Ravens being 2-5 and the Bengals 3-5, and being without Burrow.
Pittsburgh is 4-3 but has a tough remaining schedule.
With the way their defense is playing, the Ravens or Bengals can easily surpass Pittsburgh in the AFC North.
This has been an embarrassing performance by the Steelers’ defense, which all falls on Mike Tomlin.
Pittsburgh will not have any success as long as Tomlin remains the head coach. The same thing happens year after year. Change is needed.
