Rumors are swirling around the Memphis Grizzlies regarding the future of their young stars. Point guard Ja Morant has been the subject of plenty of discussion this week following his team’s trade of Desmond Bane, with pundits believing that the Grizzlies would be undergoing a fire sale in order to stack future assets.
But according to Morant himself, he won’t be going anywhere any time soon.
Ja Morant Takes To Social Media To Dispel Rumors
On Tuesday morning’s episode of ESPN’s First Take, the always opinionated Stephen A Smith had some choice thoughts about the Grizzlies and the city of Memphis as a whole. He was quick to point out that the fans are great, but that the city itself is “unsafe”, which apparently has made certain players shy away from the opportunity of playing there.
Smith went as far as to call out the “local authorities” of the city in order to “clean some of the stuff up.” It seemed like an off-topic jab at Memphis as a whole, and certainly rubbed residents the wrong way.
"You gonna tell folks why nobody wants to be in Memphis? Or you want me to do it?"
"Cats like Jimmy Butler and others don’t feel like it’s the safest environment. I’m talking to the local authorities in Memphis." – Stephen A. Smith pic.twitter.com/qD9UjV5ZV4— Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) June 17, 2025
But amidst the rumors and low-blow comments from the talking heads on the morning shows, Ja Morant took to Twitter/X to voice his own opinion on the subject, complete with a prediction and breaking news story of his own.
Morant pointed out that Smith and the like are talking more about Memphis and the Grizzlies more than they do about the actual NBA Finals matchup that is currently taking place. Instead of highlighting the play of guys like Jalen Williams and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Morant explains that they’d rather say negative things about his team and his city on a national level.
He followed those thoughts up by saying that he’ll be in “the 209”, with his source being “ME”.
& ima be in dat 901 🐻
source : ME !!

It is quite a vote of confidence in the team’s front office to keep him around. It was expected that the Grizzlies would be undergoing some serious changes this offseason after firing their head coach just before the playoffs, and that notion held true when Bane was shipped off over the weekend.
But there aren’t many people closer to the situation that Ja Morant himself, and his social media post should do plenty in the way of disparaging any trade rumors that surround him.
