Former NFL coach Jack Del Rio is resigning as a senior advisor to the University of Wisconsin football program following an arrest for drunk driving last week.

Jack Del Rio Arrested

Del Rio was currently working as an advisor to Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell.

Per a Madison Police Department incident report, Del Rio was arrested early Friday morning after his vehicle hit a street sign, broke a fence, and came to a rest in a yard during a crash.

Del Rio did show signs of impairment and admitted to driving. He did not suffer any injuries.

Del Rio, 61, was arrested for first offense OWI.

Fickell informed reporters about Del Rio’s decision to resign during Monday’s press conference.

“I’ve been in communication on Friday with our administration,” Fickell said via Anderley Penwell. “Have had some communication, obviously, with Jack, have sat down with him and he’ll be releasing a statement (soon) … that he’s going to move forward and he’s going to resign and move on.”

“But it’s a tough situation,” Fickell added. “Decisions that all of us have to be able to take full responsibility for. So that’s what Jack will do, and we’ll continue to move forward.”

Jack Del Rio Releases Statement

Del Rio released a statement to announce his resignation.

“I’m grateful to Coach Fickell and the University of Wisconsin for the opportunity to work with such a talented coaching and support staff and some of the best young football players in the country,” Del Rio said in a statement Monday. “I have decided to step away from my position with the team, so they can focus all their attention on the remainder of the season.”

After playing in the NFL for over 10 years, Del Rio began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Saints in 1997.

Del Rio finally received a chance to be a head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003. Del Rio was the Jaguars’ head from 2003 to 2011, compiling an overall record of 68-71.

Del Rio’s second stint as a head coach came with the Oakland Raiders from 2015 to 2017. Del Rio’s best year came in 2016, leading the Raiders to a 12-4 regular season record before losing in the Wild Card round.

Del Rio’s most recent NFL job came as the defensive coordinator of the Washington Football Team from 2020 to 2023.
