For one final time, Cena is stepping into a WWE ring.
Cena will square off against “The Ring General” Gunther in his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The event will take place on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Fans can stream WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event at 8 p.m. ET on Peacock in the United States and YouTube internationally.
Gunther earned his way into this match by winning The Last Time Is Now Tournament, a 16-man competition to determine Cena’s final opponent. Gunther defeated Je’Von Evans, Carmelo Hayes, and Solo Sikoa to reach the tournament championship.
In the finals, Gunther defeated LA Knight by submission to win the tournament and advance to Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he will face “The Last Real Champion,” John Cena.
Instead of continuing to be a part-time wrestler, Cena has decided to go out on his own terms. In July 2024, Cena announced a 12-month Farewell Tour starting in January 2025 that would mark his final year as a full-time WWE wrestler.
Over the last 12 months, Cena appeared 36 times on WWE programming and wrestled in 18 matches. Cena has done some of the best work of his career during this farewell tour, facing off against iconic opponents such as Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, AJ Styles, CM Punk, and Brock Lesnar.
In March, Cena won the Elimination Chamber match to earn a WWE Championship match against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania. After the match, Cena stunned the entire wrestling world by attacking Rhodes and turning heel for the first time in over 20 years.
Cena went on to defeat Rhodes at WrestleMania to win the Undisputed WWE Championship. This win marked Cena’s 17th time as a WWE world champion, a company record.
Cena remained a heel until SummerSlam, when he lost the title to Rhodes in a spectacular match.
Since August, Cena has been receiving boisterous ovations in every city, including Boston.
In Beantown, Cena defeated Dominik Mysterio to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship and become a Grand Slam champion. Cena later dropped the belt to Mysterio at SummerSlam.

Nothing is permanent in the WWE. Countless WWE superstars have retired and then come back to wrestle, including Edge, Trish Stratus, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, and Sting.
Cena has repeatedly said that he will not wrestle another match in the WWE after Saturday Night’s Main Event. Cena said he might show up at events in the future, but it will not be to wrestle.
