Kevin Durant achieved a massive milestone on Tuesday night. In the Phoenix Suns’ tough loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, the 18-year veteran became just the 9th player in NBA history to reach 30,000 points in a career. And should he keep up his usual scoring average, his name will move up the all-time scoring chart during Wednesday night’s action.

Kevin Durant Should Pass Dr. J On NBA Scoring List On Wednesday

It has been more than ten years since he led the league in points per game, but Durant has been one of the most consistent scorers in the NBA throughout his time in the league. He has put up 25+ points per in every season since his rookie year, and finished as the leader in scoring average four different times. Even into his mid-30s, he has remained as efficient as ever, and is currently ranked 6th overall with his 27.1 point average.

And should he come even remotely close to that number in Wednesday’s game against the Rockets, he’ll find himself moving up the NBA all-time scoring list.

Durant came into the 2024-25 season ranked 10th on the all-time scoring list with 28,924 career points, having passed both Shaquille O’Neal and Carmelo Anthony last year. He was able to move into 9th place earlier this year by surpassing Moses Malone, and is now just 19 points away from moving into the 8th spot. Julius Erving finished his illustrious career with a total of 30,026, which Durant should surpass in his game against the Rockets.

He’ll remain in 8th place on the list for a good while. The next player that Durant will be looking to pass up is Wilt Chamberlain, but he is still about 1,400 points shy of the former Lakers’ great. But it would likely be a quick stay in the 7th slot for Durant, as Dirk Nowitzki’s total is within about 140 points of Chamberlain’s.

Every player within the top 50 on the NBA all-time scoring list is either in the Hall of Fame, or is widely projected to be when all is said and done in their careers.

For reference, Kevin Durant is still 11,600+ points behind LeBron James, who is at the top of the list.
