Free agent guard Klay Thompson plans to join the Dallas Mavericks and sign a three-year, $50 million deal, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Monday. Klay Thompson Plans To Join Dallas Mavericks Thompson had four-year offers for more money, but taking less was offset by the chance to win a fifth championship with the Mavs and difference in state taxes. Agent Greg Lawrence of @wassbasketball led Thompson in serious talks with Mavs and Lakers, among others. — Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 1, 2024 After 13 seasons in Golden State, Thompson’s time as a Warrior has ended. The Mavericks are finalizing details to acquire Thompson via multiteam sign-and-trade including the Warriors and Charlotte Hornets. Charlotte would acquire Dallas guard Josh Green. Wojnarowski reports that Thompson had multiple four-year offers for more money. Ultimately, the chance of winning another championship and the player-friendly state taxes in Texas became the deciding factors for Thompson. Thompson and his backcourt running mate, Steph Curry, formed arguably the greatest shooting backcourt in NBA history. The duo, paired with Draymond Green, led the Warriors to four NBA titles in eight seasons, powering one of the best dynasties of the last three decades. Thompson, 34, suffered a torn ACL and torn Achilles that caused him to miss the 2020 and 2021 seasons. However, Thompson had a bounce-back year in 2023, averaging 17.9 points with a 3-point percentage of 38.7%. Thompson also transitioned from being a starter to a bench player for the first time in his career. With Thompson, Dallas adds another knockdown shooter and versatile defender to pair with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Where Does Golden State Go From Here? Adrian Wojnarowski: "A lot of the teams who lost out on Mikal Bridges from Brooklyn have transferred over, trying to see if they can land Lauri Markkanen out of Utah, Golden State is one of those teams.” (h/t @ohnohedidnt24) https://t.co/vo2SaX9vMI — Hoop Central (@TheHoopCentral) July 1, 2024 With Thompson’s departure, where do the Warriros go from here? Golden State was interested in acquiring Mikal Bridges and Paul George. However, Bridges was traded to the New York Knicks, and Paul George signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. Wojnarowski reports that the Warriors will pivot to acquiring Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen. To land Markkanen, the Warriors will need to offer multiple first-round draft picks and a few players. Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga is a likely candidate to be included in the trade.
