LeBron James Compares Himself To An Aged Wine Entering His 23rd Season

LeBron James is entering the 23rd season of his incredible NBA career, and is still performing at an unusually high level. And judging by his comments as the Los Angeles Lakers begin their training camp, it doesn’t appear that he’ll be slowing down any time soon.

LeBron James Still Feeling Young As He Approaches Age 41

The longevity of James’ career is unprecedented. No other player in the history of the league has extended their career past Year 22, as James is set to pass Vince Carter in that respect this season. Not only is he now the longest-tenured NBA player ever, but James is still performing at a level that makes him one of the best in the league.

There has been no notable statistical drop off in recent years. James is no longer averaging upwards of 30 points per game, but his figure of 24.4 per in 2024-25 was good enough for 13th in the league. In addition to the points, he posted 7.8 rebounds per, and his 8.2 assists were the 6th highest in the NBA.

During a training camp press conference on Tuesday, LeBron James commented on his advancing age and how he feels heading into Year 23. He spoke about how he spends much of his time around the younger players on the team, as well as his children who keep him youthful:

“How could I not feel young? I mean, my wife is beautiful. I feel good. I look at my age as like the wine that I drink. The older wine I drink the better it is. I feel great.”

The Lakers are hoping for at least one more high-level season out of their superstar. Los Angeles came up short in the postseason last year after acquiring Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks, but are looking to do better than a first round exit in the first full year of the two stars playing together.

But getting to the top of the Western Conference will be one of the biggest challenges that James has faced in recent years. There are four teams that have better odds of representing the West in the NBA Finals, with the Lakers listed at +950. As far as overall championship odds go, Los Angeles has a designation of +1400.
