Edmonton Oilers centre Leon Draisaitl of Cologne, Germany recorded his 11th career National Hockey League hat trick on Tuesday (nine in the regular season and two in the playoffs). He accomplished the feat in a dominant 5-1 Edmonton Oilers win over the Calgary Flames at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, on Tuesday.
Not the first star
Normally when a player gets a hat trick, he is the first star. Not on Tuesday. That is because the other Oilers superstar forward on the roster was simply electrifying, and was awarded with first star honours. Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario, the Oilers captain, had five points (all assists). He now leads the NHL in assists (44), and points (67).
How did Draisaitl score his three goals?
Draisaitl scored the game-winning goal with 17 seconds left in the first period on the power-play. At the time, Draisaitl broke a 1-1 deadlock and put the Oilers up 2-1. Zach Hyman of Toronto, Ontario and McDavid had the assists. Draisaitl then put the Oilers up 3-1 on the power-play at 1:59 of the second period. Defenseman Evan Bouchard of Oakville, Ontario and McDavid had the assists. Draisaitl then closed out the scoring at 5:38 of the third period on the power-play. Hyman and McDavid had the assists. In Draisaitl’s hat trick marker he was wide open at the side of the net, and when he received the pass from Hyman, he scored past Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf with absolute ease.
Ended scoring drought
Draisaitl has an impressive 20 goals this season (seventh in the National Hockey League), but he had not scored a goal since December 6. The fact Draisaitl went eight straight games without a goal is simply unprecedented. However, Draisaitl’s name was in the box score on a regular basis in that time. That is because in the eight game stretch, he had 15 assists.
Draisaitl’s 2025-26 NHL stats
In 38 games, Draisatl has 20 goals and 35 assists for 55 points. He is a +9 with 16 penalty minutes, 27 power-play points, one shorthanded point, two game-winning goals, 105 shots on goal, 332 faceoff wins, 10 blocked shots, 18 hits, 11 takeaways, and 58 giveaways.
Draisaitl’s shorthanded point was a shorthanded goal and came in a 3-1 Oilers win over the Vancouver Canucks on October 11. Defenseman Darnell Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario and McDavid had the assists on a goal to finish the scoring with one minute and 13 seconds left into an empty net.
Draisaitl’s other game-winning goal came on November 15 in a 4-3 Oilers overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Draisaitl scored from McDavid and Bouchard at the 19 second mark of the extra period.
