Madison Keys and Taylor Townsend

Madison Keys and Taylor Townsend are the last American women to compete in the 2025 Australian Open in ladies’ singles and doubles, respectively.

Each woman has an interesting semifinal match ahead of her.

Madison Keys

Madison Keys did not play in Australia last year due to a shoulder injury.  She loves the Australian leg of the WTA Tour and returned in 2025 as a newlywed (married to her coach Bjorn Fratangelo) and ready to compete.

Keys has changed her serve, shown uncharacteristic comfort with net play, and changed to a Yonex racquet after years using Wilson.  Her desire to hone her game as she turns 30 this year shows how committed she is to being successful on the WTA Tour in 2025.

This has resulted in the Adelaide International title, where finalist and friend Jessica Pegula said that Keys is playing some of the best tennis of her career.

She has a semifinal date with Iga Swiatek who has been dominant and ironically under-the-radar this year in Melbourne.

Win or lose, Keys will be back in the Top 10 when the updated rankings are released next week.

Taylor Townsend

In women’s doubles, Taylor Townsend continues her successful partnership with the Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova in 2025.  The pair won Wimbledon last season and are aiming for another Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

Siniakova has shown she can win Grand Slams with several partners, most notably longtime partner and compatriot Barbora Krejcikova and Coco Gauff with whom she won the 2024 French Open doubles title.  Townsend has won WTA titles with various doubles partners and was a 2023 French Open finalist with Leylah Fernandez.

In their way is a young and exciting duo Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider.  The two are good friends who have taken their excellent singles games and created a fun doubles partnership.
