Manchester United Manager Ruben Amorim

Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has said Manchester United wants to sign a fitting left-back for new manager Ruben Amorim’s system in 2025. As per Romano, the Red Devils have already started assessing options and there are more than three candidates on their shortlist.

Manchester United dismissed Erik ten Hag at the end of October, eventually replacing him with Sporting CP sensation Amorim. At Sporting, Amorim deployed a three-man backline with two wing-backs providing support both in attack and defense. These two players worked tirelessly from start to finish, as the effectiveness of the system greatly hinged on their performance.

After enjoying so much success with the 3-4-2-1 system, Amorim unsurprisingly wants to use the strategy at Manchester United. However, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia struggling to keep themselves fit over the last 18 months, Noussair Mazraoui is the only dependable option at left-back.

Since the wing-backs will be under massive load, Amorim cannot proceed with just one option at left-back. The club wants to solve this problem as soon as possible and identified multiple options who can fit into Amorim’s system.

Fabrizio Romano Says Manchester United Wants to Sign a Left-Back for Ruben Amorim

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Romano revealed Manchester United’s transfer priorities under Amorim.

He wrote:

Man United want to sign new left back for Amorim’s system in 2025, it’s already planned.

The club is already assessing options with more than 3 candidates in list.

The Red Devils are planning to bolster their squad as soon as possible. However, after spending over $250 million on new signings over the summer, they could have to wait until July 2025 to register a new player.

Romano concluded by adding:

It only remains to be seen whether it’s gonna happen in January or summer window (most likely).”

According to The Football Faithful, Manchester United could have two Premier League left-backs on their list. Bournemouth man Milos Kerkez, who caught the club’s attention during the summer transfer window, and Fulham star Antonee Robinson could be on the Mancunians’ shortlist. Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies, who will become a free agent on June 30, 2025, is also on their radar, but Real Madrid are currently leading the race to secure his services.
