Stafford’s health has been one of the biggest questions throughout NFL training camp.
The 37-year-old quarterback has been sidelined throughout training camp with an aggravated disc in his back. Stafford received epidurals to combat the pain and treat the discomfort.
Although the Rams said Stafford should be ready for Week 1, it doesn’t feel like that’s an ironclad statement.
Stafford was supposed to return to practice last week after a successful throwing workout. However, Stafford’s back acted up, and the team elected to keep him on the sidelines.
Stafford worked out again last weekend, and this time, it led to him returning to practice this week. Though Stafford is not 100%, it’s a step in the right direction.
Stafford addressed the media on Thursday and revealed a positive update regarding his injury.
“Doing everything we can to try to get to feeling as good as I can,” Stafford told reporters via the Rams X account. “I’ve done that. And just really everything I could possibly do. Done a ton of research just trying to help myself out. Good things is I feel pretty good the last couple of days out there practicing. Was able to do a little bit more than I thought I was going to be able to do the first day, and then just been trying to stack days.”
Rams head coach Sean McVay is “pleased” with Stafford’s progress and how he continues to build a rapport with his teammates.
“I’ve seen a guy that’s gotten better and better,” McVay said via the Rams’ team website. “He looks like the stud that we know. I think the first day was kind of getting comfortable, just getting his feet wet a little bit. And then I think each of the last couple days, he’s played really fast. He’s activated all parts of the field. Like I mentioned to you guys the other day, thought our rush on defense did a great job, and you could feel that pocket collapse. And he’s getting through progressions quickly, so he looked outstanding today.”

For now, the Rams don’t have to say if Stafford will be ready for Week 1 against the Houston Texans.
Stafford said he’s doing “everything under the sun” to be ready for Sept. 7.
With a healthy Stafford in the lineup, the Rams are viewed as one of the top contenders to challenge the Philadelphia Eagles for NFC supremacy.
If Stafford can’t play in Week 1, backup Jimmy Garoppolo would become the starter.
