Aryna Sabalenka

In 2025, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka entered the Miami Open, dealing with adversity and heartbreaking losses in her last two hardcourt finals, the Australian Open won by Madison Keys and Dubai won by Mirra Andreeva.

This made Sabalenka hungrier for the win, and she got it.  Her game was as solid as ever in a straight set win over Jessica Pegula.

Aryna Sabalenka’s Game Is Practically Infallible

Truthfully, Keys and Andreeva’s wins are even more extraordinary when Sabalenka’s game is looked at closely.  Led by a ferocious first serve, great movement that has improved in recent years, and an underrated forehand, there is no doubt that not only is she the best player in the world, she is also the best hardcourt player of her generation.

Jessica Pegula’s movement has improved in recent years, which is what kept her in the match.  She did everything she could to get the balls back, forcing Aryna Sabalenka to hit extra balls and potentially make an unforced error.  It is physically and mentally exhausting dealing with Sabalenka’s power and shotmaking.

Sabalenka Keeps Wracking Up The Points

With the win, Sabalenka keeps separating herself from Iga Swiatek in the rankings race.  She is over 3,000 points ahead of Swiatek.  While Swiatek’s strength is the clay court leg of the season, it is worth noting that Sabalenka did not play Wimbledon last year due to injury so she is in a great position to hold on to the World No. 1 ranking for the foreseeable future.

As Tennis Channel’s Prakash Amritraj said before the match, Aryna Sabalenka is not watching the points.  She is trying to win Grand Slams, and if those come her way, the points will take care of themselves.

Aryna Sabalenka adds this Miami Open trophy to her growing trophy case.  She was the 2019 Miami Open doubles champion with Elise Mertens.  Sabalenka and Mertens won the doubles Sunshine Double that year.
