Ahead of NBA Opening Night, NBC revealed key details involving Michael Jordan and his role with the network during basketball coverage.

Michael Jordan’s NBC Role Revealed

For the first time since 2002, the NBA will air on NBC. As part of the new media rights package, NBCUniversal has an 11-year agreement with the NBA to broadcast games on NBC and Peacock.

NBC signed Jordan as a special contributor to bolster the network’s coverage.

Jordan’s role is set to begin on Tuesday night, and NBC teased a preview of what fans can expect.

During halftime of the game between the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder, the network will air MJ: Insights to Excellence, a new interview series featuring Jordan’s commentary about the NBA.

During the series, Mike Tirico will interview Jordan and get his thoughts about the league.

NBA Opening Night Details

The NBA comes to NBC in 2025-2026. For the first time, Peacock will air NBA games this season.

The 2025-2026 season begins with the NBA champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the league’s reigning MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Thunder will raise their championship banner before hosting the Houston Rockets.

After being traded from the Phoenix Suns this past offseason, Kevin Durant makes his highly anticipated debut for the Rockets.

NBA Showtime, NBC’s pregame and postgame show, begins at 6:30 p.m. ET. Maria Taylor will host NBA Showtime with Naismith Basketball Hall of Famers Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady.

NBA Showtime will be on-site at Paycom Center for the Thunder game.

The game between the Thunder and Rockets tips off at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

Tirico will call the game alongside analysts Reggie Miller and Jamal Crawford. Zora Stephenson will provide reports from the sidelines.

The second game of the doubleheader features Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors heading south to face Luka Dončić and the Los Angeles Lakers from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.

The game tips off at 10 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. Noah Eagle will handle play-by-play responsiblities alongside analyst Grant Hill and sideline reporter Ashley ShahAhmadi.

LeBron James has been ruled out for the game due to sciatica on his right side. James is expected to miss the first three to four weeks of the season with the condition.
