Michigan has fired head coach Sherrone Moore. Who will be the next head coach of the Michigan Wolverines?

Michigan Fires HC Sherrone Moore

Michigan needs a new head football coach.

In a move that will send shockwaves throughout the college football community, Michigan has fired Moore, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Pete Thamel, and Dan Wetzel.

An investigation revealed that Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, leading to his dismissal from the university. Bill Poggi has been named the interim head coach.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement, “U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”

After working as an assistant at Louisville and Central Michigan, Moore arrived at Michigan in 2018 as the team’s tight ends coach. In 2021, Jim Harbaugh promoted Moore to offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator.

In 2003, Moore became Michigan’s lone offensive coordinator. During that season, Moore served as the acting head coach four times as Harbaugh served his suspension for the sign-stealing scandal. Michigan went 4-0 in those games.

Michigan went 15-0 in 2023 and won the College Football Playoff National Championship.

The following year, Harbaugh departed for the Los Angeles Chargers, and Michigan promoted Moore to head coach.

In his first year, Moore went 8-5, culminating with an upset victory over No. 2 Ohio State in the regular season finale.

In 2025, Michigan finished with a 7-3 record and earned a bid to play in the Citrus Bowl against Texas.

Michigan’s Next Head Coach: Candidates

Michigan is now a late addition to the college coaching carousel.

Most of the Power 4 schools that needed to fill their coaching vacancies have made their hires. This includes LSU, Florida, Auburn, and Penn State.

Even though it’s late in the process, Michigan will attract major interest from coaches at the collegiate and professional levels.

Harbaugh is not leaving the Chargers to return to Michigan, so cross that name off.

Michigan could make calls to Nick Saban and Urban Meyer to gauge their interest, but both will likely remain retired.

Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is a name to watch. Minter was Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator during their championship season. Minter should garner interest for NFL head coaching jobs this offseason, but Michigan could always lure him back to the college game with money and power.

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady is going to be a popular candidate among fans because of what he did during LSU’s national championship-winning season in 2019.

If Alabama loses its opening round playoff game to Oklahoma, will the Crimson Tide faithful call for the firing of Kalen Deboer? If fired, DeBoer becomes an intriguing candidate.
