Former Michigan Linebacker Jason Hewlett is leaving the Big Ten for the ACC as he transfers to Boston College.
Jason Hewlett is heading east.
The Michigan sophomore linebacker has officially committed to continue his college football career at Boston College. After two seasons in Ann Arbor, the Youngstown, Ohio, native is looking to turn the page and find more opportunities with the Eagles.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 227 pounds, Hewlett was primarily used on special teams during his time with the Wolverines. He appeared in nine games during the 2024 season, registering three tackles and earning the program’s Most Improved Player award for his efforts on special teams. While his time in the Big Ten didn’t feature much defensive action, Hewlett’s development and work ethic clearly caught the attention of coaches — both at Michigan and now at Boston College.

A Promising Talent Looking to Break Through
Before his time at Michigan, Hewlett was a dynamic two-way player at Chaney High School in Youngstown, where he showcased his versatility and athleticism on both sides of the ball. As a senior, he racked up 59 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions, and three forced fumbles. On offense, he caught 14 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns and even added a kickoff return for a score.
Hewlett’s senior season was especially meaningful, as it came after a devastating, season-ending injury as a junior. His bounce-back year helped lead Chaney to a 10-2 record and proved that Hewlett had the resolve and talent to succeed at the next level.
Rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com in the class of 2023, Hewlett was ranked No. 24 overall in the state of Ohio and the No. 34 athlete nationally. Initially committed to Cincinnati, he flipped to Michigan in late November 2022, choosing the Wolverines over a host of other Power Five offers, including Kentucky, NC State, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia.
Opportunity Awaits at Boston College
Now at Boston College, Hewlett joins a program eager to build under new leadership and fresh momentum. His versatility and special teams experience give him a strong foundation, and with three years of eligibility remaining, the opportunity is there for Hewlett to carve out a bigger role on the defensive side of the ball.

The Eagles have long prided themselves on defensive toughness, and Hewlett’s aggressive, hard-hitting style should fit well into their system. Whether as a rotational linebacker, a special teams contributor, or both, Hewlett brings depth, athleticism, and grit to a Boston College team that’s looking to rise in the ACC.
A Timely Move in the Portal Era
Hewlett’s transfer comes during the NCAA’s spring window, which opened April 16 and will remain open for 10 days. As part of the 2025 recruiting cycle, this period gives players like Hewlett a chance to reassess and find the right fit before summer workouts begin.
For Jason Hewlett, that next fit is with Boston College — and it just might be where he finally gets the chance to show everything he can do.
