Bo Bichette enters this offseason as one of the most intriguing free agents on the market, a 27-year-old star shortstop coming off a resurgent 2025 campaign and a World Series run that pushed his value to new heights.
Whether he returns to the Toronto Blue Jays or chooses a new direction entirely, Bichette’s free agency promises to be one of the defining storylines of the winter.
MLB Free Agency: Will Bo Bichette Stay In Toronto?
Here are three possible destinations for the 27-year-old shortstop this winter:
Toronto Blue Jays
Bichette has spent his entire MLB career with the Blue Jays, making him a homegrown star and a recognizable face for the franchise. He has expressed the desire to stay in Toronto, which boosts the chances of a reunion, and the team likely wants to keep their World Series team intact for the most part. Keeping Bichette would help preserve stability at a key offensive position and signal continuity in their contention plan.
Toronto has made a qualifying offer to Bichette, showing they want to keep their options alive. On the flip side, his market value has spiked, so Toronto knows they may have to meet a significant contract to retain him.
Atlanta Braves
Atlanta has a clear need at shortstop: their 2025 production from that position was weak (just three home runs and a .550 OPS) and the incumbent, Ha‑Seong Kim, has opted out. Last year’s starter at the position, Nick Allen, remains on the roster, but the Braves undoubtedly need an upgrade from his poor production. He played second base in the 2025 World Series and demonstrated enough versatility that he might fit into the Braves’ infield dynamic if needed.
The Braves are poised to increase payroll and make splashy moves to re-enter the contender conversation. Insider projections list the Braves as a likely suitor for top free-agents this offseason, including Bichette.
Detroit Tigers
Detroit has a clear need in the middle-infield. The Tigers’ shortstop and second base positions were weak offensively in 2025, and Bichette would immediately upgrade one of those spots.
Bichette fits their timeline, too. The Tigers have young talent coming up in the way of prospects, but still need a proven, impactful bat now. Bichette’s age and talent make him a logical “accelerator” type addition. Detroit should have some willingness to spend this offseason, as well. Some projections have Bichette commanding an eight-year, ~$200+ million contract, and the Tigers are considered one of the plausible suitors who have the financial means to make an offer.
