Which teams will be the ones making offers? Here are three likely destinations for Ranger Suárez.
San Diego Padres
The Padres figure to be one of the more active MLB teams when it comes to free agent pitchers. Of their five starters who logged more than 15 starts in 2025, two are free agents (Dylan Cease, Michael King), and Yu Darvish is out for the entire 2026 season after undergoing elbow surgery.
Suárez would be a solid fit, and he should be a main target. He is a lefty arm, which is especially valuable to the Padres. According to SI, their 2025 lefty starters combined for a 5.77 ERA in games they started. Suárez has been outstanding as a postseason performer as well, and San Diego has had trouble getting over the playoff hump in recent years.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays will be looking to capitalize on their World Series run and keep their championship window open. In order to do so, they’ll need to bolster their starting pitching, as they were carried last postseason by some unlikely and perhaps unsustainable performances.
Suárez wouldn’t be expected to be a no.1 starter in Toronto, but he could come in and be a crucial piece of the rotation. The Blue Jays lacked in starts by left-handed pitchers in 2025 with just 20, meaning Suárez would bring another needed dynamic for their AL Championship defense.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs are notoriously frugal when it comes to free agent spending, so it is hard to expect much out of them this (or any) winter. But they have a hole in their rotation with Shota Imanaga hitting the open market, and their top starter from 2025 was 34-year-old Matthew Boyd, whose outstanding season was likely a one-off.
With Suárez seen as a second-tier free agent pitcher this offseason, he won’t command the type of money that the biggest MLB names will. That may work in the Cubs favor given their reluctance to spend, as he checks many of the boxes when it comes to their needs in free agency.
