New York Mets
There are a number of reasons why Cody Bellinger and the New York Mets could have mutual interest. The Mets have real positional needs that align closely with Bellinger’s unique skill set, with potential openings in both center field and first base, two spots Bellinger has experience playing.
It would be a short move across town, and Bellinger is used to performing well in big markets. He had a very solid season with the Yankees in 2025, which proves he can handle the spotlight.
It may not just about the money or the fit; it seems to be about winning. Insiders have noted that Bellinger said his only real “prerequisite” when choosing his next team is that he wants to play for a winner. The Mets, coming off seasons of high expectations, could present that opportunity, especially if they view him as a key piece to shore up their defense and power.
New York Yankees
Returning to the Yankees may just be Bellinger’s best bet this MLB offseason. There is obvious mutual interest, as Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has publicly stated that New York is “very interested” in bringing Bellinger back. From the team’s perspective, Bellinger’s 2025 performance justifies that interest. He put up a .272 average, hit 29 home runs, drove in 98 RBIs in 152 games in 2025.
Bellinger also has positional versatility, which is extremely valuable to the Yankees. Bellinger has played across all three outfield spots and even some first base for the team, and his left-handed swing is tailor-made for Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch.

The Tigers have identified a need for more power and veteran presence in their lineup, and Bellinger could fill that role perfectly. According to a free-agent target list, Detroit is specifically looking to add “a thump” to the batting order, and Bellinger’s 29 home runs in 2025 make him a proven power bat.
His defensive versatility would give the Tigers flexibility. He can play across the outfield and has experience at first base, which could be very useful for Detroit, especially with Spencer Torkelson’s role at first base still somewhat fluid.
The addition of Bellinger would bring big-league experience and a championship-level pedigree to a young Tigers core. And because the Tigers are not currently locked into huge long-term payroll commitments, they might have enough financial flexibility to make a competitive offer.
