The San Francisco Giants had a solid start to the 2025 MLB season, but have fallen on hard times lately. But instead of blaming the coaches or the players, the team’s president of baseball operations, former MVP catcher Buster Posey, says that the tough stretch is on his shoulders, and his shoulders alone.
MLB: Buster Posey Takes Blame For Poor Stretch From Giants
This is the first year for Posey in his new position. After a decorated career that saw him help bring three World Series championships to San Francisco, he is now the decision maker when it comes to the roster.
He got off on the right foot, as the Giants jumped out to a 41-29 record, and were tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the lead in the NL West as recently as June 13th. The team that had 80-to-1 odds of winning the World Series during spring training had gotten that figure all the way down to 25-to-1, and Posey was being praised for his early work with the team’s lineup and pitching staff.
Buster Posey just said something I have not often heard from baseball bosses during a rough stretch … “If anybody deserves any blame from the top, it should be on me. It shouldn't be on our manager or coaching staff. I'm the one who sets the roster.”

When Posey and the team were able to swing a trade for three-time All-Star Rafael Devers a couple of weeks ago, Posey was earning God-tier status with fans of the team.
Things haven’t exactly gone as planned over the last 15 games. The Giants have posted a record of just 4-11 in those contests, including being swept by the Miami Marlins and losing two of three against the White Sox in Chicago.

Just over two weeks after being atop their division, the Giants entered Tuesday’s MLB action sitting a full eight games back of the Dodgers, and 1.5 games out of the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League.
Based on a recent quote of his, Posey is the one who deserves all of the blame. In what was a rare statement for a president of operations to make, the 38-year-old said the following:
“If anyone deserves any blame from the top, it should be on me. It shouldn’t be on our manager or coaching staff. I’m the one who sets the roster.”
Even with the addition of Devers, the Giants’ bats have gone cold. Eight of the eleven losses have come by multiple runs, and they’ve been able to score just four times in their last three games while giving up 10 runs themselves.
San Francisco has three more games against the Diamondbacks this week, then will take on the Athletics during the holiday weekend. They’ll endure a tough stretch the week before the MLB All-Star Break, as they’re slated to take on the Phillies and Dodgers between now and July 14th.
