MLB Set To Make History With Largest Regular-Season Crowd Ever

Major League Baseball is taking a bold leap out of its traditional ballparks this summer. This coming Saturday, the inaugural MLB Speedway Classic will take place in Tennessee, as the Atlanta Braves are set to take on the Cincinnati Reds on the infield of Bristol Motor Speedway. And given how many tickets have already been sold, the event is poised to break the MLB record for single game attendance.

MLB Set To Break Attendance Records This Weekend

This unique venue transformation marks the first regular‑season MLB game ever played in Tennessee, and has already drawn unprecedented attention. With over 85,000 tickets sold, the event is guaranteed to break the all‑time MLB paid attendance record of 84,587 set in 1954.

It is still unclear if there is a cap on how many tickets will be sold in all, but some officials anticipate an eventual attendance that nears the 100,000 attendees mark.

A major attraction beyond the baseball is the full entertainment lineup and immersive fan experience: Grammy-winners Tim McGraw, Pitbull, and Jake Owen will perform pregame concerts inside the Speedway. A Fan Zone opens at noon, offering interactive features including a 110-foot Ferris wheel, batting tunnels, food trucks, exhibits, and music.

To honor the NASCAR heritage of the venue, both MLB teams will sport racing-themed uniforms—the Braves with flame-trimmed cap brims, the Reds with checkered-flag visor details, numbers styled like race cars, and bold italic fonts.

Which Games Previously Held The Attendance Records?

The highest paid attendance for a regular-season Major League Baseball game occurred on August 3, 1954, when 84,587 fans packed Cleveland Municipal Stadium to watch a doubleheader between the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees. That record has stood for over 70 years, though it’s now set to be challenged by the upcoming Speedway Classic.

The largest crowd ever to attend an MLB game of any kind was on March 29, 2008, when 115,301 fans attended the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for an exhibition game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox. The game was held to celebrate the Dodgers’ 50th anniversary in Los Angeles.
