The 2025 Mubadala Citi Open has not proven great for the American women so far. In singles, top seeds Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro were ousted early. Taylor Townsend was the last one standing, and she was beaten by Leylah Fernandez, who also defeated Pegula, in the quarterfinals. Townsend is still in the doubles hunt with partner Shuai Zhang with an upcoming semifinal match against Emma Raducanu and Elena Rybakina; however, the all-American doubles team of Sofia Kenin and Caroline Dolehide has already made it to the finals.

Sofia Kenin and Caroline Dolehide upset the top seeded team of Asia Muhammad and Erin Routliffe in straight sets. Asia Muhammad and Taylor Towsend won the Mubadala Citi Open doubles title last year. Kenin and Dolehide are currently ranked 35th and 36th in the live WTA doubles rankings. A DC win would move both into the Top 20s.
Doubles have been a headliner this week in DC with Venus Williams and Hailey Baptiste entertaining the fans early in the week, and the ER squared team of Rybakina and Raducanu have been surprisingly good considering they have never played together and do not play much doubles in general.
Missing Some Big American Names At Mubadala Citi Open This Year
As I said before, this has been an odd Citi Open, in my opinion, particularly on the women’s side. We have so many highly ranked American women and many are not here, most notably French Open champion Coco Gauff, Australian Open champion Madison Keys, and Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova. It is a tough slog through the US hardcourts this summer with back-to-back 1000 tournaments in Montreal (for WTA) and Cincinnati after the 500 in DC concludes. It is not surprising that some top-ranked players opt out, but Gauff is a former champion. Her 2023 Summer of Coco got underway in DC so fans miss some of that magic that didn’t happen last year either because of the Olympics.
