The NBA is conducting its own investigation on Malik Beasley and his gambling allegations. ESPN’s David Purdum was first to report.
Beasley was part of a federal probe in which he was considered a “target” initially but is now a “subject.”
The Department of Justice defines a “target” as “a person to whom the prosecutor or grand jury has substantial evidence linking him or her to the commission of a crime and who, in the judgment of the prosecutor, is a putative defendant.”
As a “subject,” Beasley is considered “a person whose conduct is within the scope of the grand jury’s investigation.” That means Beasley still has the possibility of being charged with a crime.
The investigation is related to Beasley’s time with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2023-24 season.
Beasley was on the verge of signing a three-year, $42 million contract with the Detroit Pistons before news of the federal investigation broke. He was a key player for the Pistons last season, finishing second in Sixth Man of the Year voting.
Shooting 41.6 percent on 9.3 3-point attempts per game, Beasley became a vital part of Detroit’s offense. He finished the season with the second-most threes in the league, only behind Minnesota Timberwolves superstar Anthony Edwards.
The league’s investigation is said to be in its final stages.
Teams Waiting To Know Beasley’s Status
Several teams are said to be interested in acquiring Beasley’s services, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Beasley posted on Instagram just two days ago he was on the verge of making a decision. One would think he only does that if he feels confident about the news that may emerge in the coming days.
“Year 10 is approaching… probably the most interesting one of them all. And the goal remains the same… be better than last year.
“My decision is near.”
