The Atlanta Hawks are signing Nickeil Alexander-Walker to a four-year, $62 million deal, which includes a trade kicker and player option, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal is a part of a sign-and-trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves, in which the Hawks will send out a 2027 second-round pick and cash to acquire Alexander-Walker.

The Hawks’ offseason is off to a tremendous start. After acquiring Kristaps Porzingis from the Boston Celtics, they also made a draft night trade to move down 10 spots and acquire a highly valuable 2026 first-round pick (most favorable between the New Orleans Pelicans and Milwaukee Bucks). Now, they’ve added a proven playoff guard to their rotation in Alexander-Walker.
The deal is a home run for Alexander-Walker, who receives long-term security and slightly more than the mid-level exception as he joins an Atlanta team looking rather formidable in a weaker Eastern Conference. As a point-of-attack stalwart defensively, Alexander-Walker is the perfect guard to pair alongside Trae Young. He also shot 39 percent from three during his 2.5 seasons with the Timberwolves.
The Atlanta Hawks preserve their $14.1 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception by sign and trading for Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
They are $18.5 million below the luxury tax, so they could use the full amount.

The Hawks now have some positional flexibility by adding Alexander-Walker to a wing rotation already including Dyson Daniels, Zaccharie Risacher and Jalen Johnson. They can play bigger by pairing Porzingis and Onyeka Okongwu together in the front-court or go smaller by tabbing Okongwu as the sole center on the floor. If Porzingis stays healthy next season, it’s feasible the Hawks can make a deep run in the East.
Above all else, this contract is a testament to Alexander-Walker’s individual growth. He came into the league as a ball-handler and morphed into a two-way menace who pairs well next to a high-usage guard. It’s a great development story and made him one of the most highly coveted players this free agency cycle.
