Dallas Mavericks star center Anthony Davis and his camp are hoping the team will find a suitable trade partner for the 14-year veteran before the Feb. 5 deadline.
Anthony Davis Seeking Contract Extension
According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Davis is pushing for a trade to a team that is interested in offering him an extension. He’s currently in the first season of a three-year, $175.36 million contract.
“I think that based on what I’ve been told, based on what I’m hearing, AD’s agent is reading the situation and basically saying: ‘Hey, it’s in my client’s best interest to get traded before this deadline,’” MacMahon said Thursday while on Howdy Partners.
“So I do believe there is going to come a push from that side, despite — you know, honestly, AD, family guy, nobody wants to uproot their family in the middle of a season. But, you know, again — the preference is comfort. The priority is getting paid again.”
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps added Thursday that the Mavs and Atlanta Hawks are not currently engaging in trade talks involving Davis after previously having discussions, but it could be “something to monitor over the next month.”
Atlanta isn’t rushing a deal to acquire Davis after trading Trae Young. The Hawks have a potential lottery pick in the 2026 draft with swap rights for the best pick from either the Milwaukee Bucks or New Orleans Pelicans.
Davis Suffered Another Injury
Young was on the books for $95 million as part of his five-year, $215.15 million rookie max extension, with this season and next season. His deal also includes a $48.96 million player option for 2026-27.
Moving Young provides the Hawks with financial flexibility, but acquiring an older star might not be the best move. The oft-injured Davis is no longer viewed as a reliable standout at this stage of his career.
And Davis suffered yet another injury this season during the fourth quarter of Thursday’s loss at Utah. The 6-foot-10 big man appeared to injure his left hand while he was defending Lauri Markkanen on a drive.
Davis, 32, exited the game with 2:08 remaining and did not return. The 10-time All-Star was “doubled over in pain” in the tunnel of the arena, according to MacMahon.
Through 20 appearances (all starts) this season, Davis is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.7 blocks, and 31.3 minutes per game while shooting 50.6% from the field and 27% from deep.
