NBA Rumors: Could The San Antonio Spurs Hire Steve Kerr Next Year?

Steve Kerr has been one of the most successful NBA coaches over the past decade, but his time with the Golden State Warriors could be coming to an end. If this is indeed his last season in the Bay Area, could he become the coach of the San Antonio Spurs next year?

Will Steve Kerr Find A New NBA Home In 2026?

Kerr is entering the final season of his contract with the Warriors in 2025-26. During his preseason press conference on Tuesday, he was asked about his thoughts on this potentially being his last season with the team, and gave a candid answer:

“I’m not the slightest bit concerned about it. If it’s meant for me to keep going, I’m going to keep going. If it’s meant to be for the team to move on to someone else, there will be nothing but gratitude and appreciation.”

There are plenty of variables that could affect his decision between now and next NBA offseason. The Warriors are looking to make perhaps one final run at a championship with an aging team, and there is a question as to how many more seasons superstar Steph Curry plans to play.

If things go awry during the upcoming campaign, then Kerr could be on the move next summer.

Where would he end up? There is one possible destination that makes plenty of sense.

Are The Spurs Set On Johnson As Their Head Coach Of The Future?

During his playing days, Kerr played for six different teams. He only played for one of them on more than one occasion, though, and that was the San Antonio Spurs. He played under Gregg Popovich from 1999 until 2001, and again to close out his career during the 2002-03 season. While he only played 13 minutes per game that final year, he served as something of a veteran mentor on a team that won a championship.

With Popovich recently retiring after 29 years at the helm in San Antonio, there was speculation about who would take over a job that he made prestigious. Over the summer, the keys were handed over to Spurs assistant Mitch Johnson, who has been with the organization since 2016. It is unclear if the team sees Johnson as their long term solution, or if he is a stop gap until the team is able to hire the person that they covet.

If Steve Kerr doesn’t re-up with the Warriors, and the Spurs are still looking for a new leader, then the two could be a match in the near future.
