The Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs added a running back in free agency. The Cowboys are signing Miles Sanders, while the Chiefs are bringing back Kareem Hunt.

Dallas Cowboys Sign Miles Sanders

The Dallas Cowboys are forming a new backfield in 2025.

Sanders and the Cowboys have agreed to a one-year contract. The financial terms were not disclosed.

This is the second running back the Cowboys have signed this offseason. Former Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams signed with the Cowboys earlier in free agency.

The duo replaces last year’s starter, Rico Dowdle, who signed with the Carolina Panthers.

Sanders, 27, was released by the Carolina Panthers earlier this week.

After spending his first four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Sanders signed a four-year, $25.4 million deal with the Carolina Panthers in 2023.

Sanders never lived up to the contract, rushing for 637 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons with the Panthers.

Chuba Hubbard replaced Sanders as the Panthers’ starting running back last season.

Sanders’ best season came in 2022, rushing for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns. Sanders was named to the Pro Bowl.

With the additions of Sanders and Williams, Dallas will attempt to improve upon their 27th-ranked rushing attack in terms of yards per game (100.3).

Chiefs Re-Sign Kareem Hunt

The Kansas City Chiefs are keeping some continuity in their backfield.

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Chiefs are bringing back Hunt on a one-year contract worth up to $2.5 million.

Hunt, 29, rejoins a backfield that includes Isiah Pacheco and the newly acquired Elijah Mitchell.

Hunt joined the Chiefs shortly after the 2024 season started due to Pacheco’s injury in Week 2. He quickly became the primary back once he was activated to the roster.

The veteran finished the 2024 campaign with 728 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

The Chiefs selected Hunt in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Hunt led the league in rushing (1,327 yards) in his rookie year. The running back continued to dominate during his second year before a video surfaced of Hunt pushing a woman, which led to his release.

Hunt then spent the next five seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
