NFL Free Agency: Stefon Diggs Is Meeting With The Patriots

The New England Patriots spent most of their free agent focus on bolstering their defense. But they are showing interest in one of the top NFL wide receivers that is still available on the open market, as Stefon Diggs is in Foxboro, MA visiting with the team on Thursday.
NFL Rumors: WR Stefon Diggs Meeting With The Patriots
The Patriots were one of the worst teams in the league in 2024. They ranked in the bottom-10 in both offense and defense, and the new regime led by Mike Vrabel had plenty of holes to fill as they began their rebuild. They were one of the most active teams in free agency, with a heavy focus on the defensive side of the ball.
They were able to land one of the best available players in defensive tackle Milton Williams, and bolstered their linebacker room with the signings of Harold Landry and Robert Spillane, and were able to nab former Detroit Lions cornerback Carlton Davis.
But New England was lacking in making an impact on the offensive side of the ball. They did some work along the offensive line, and made some mid-level signings at skill positions like Mack Hollins and Joshua Dobbs. But they have yet to make a true impact signing in order to boost a unit that ranked 31st in the NFL in yards in 2024.
Stefon Diggs had dinner with the #Patriots staff last night and has meetings and a physical today with the team, per @AlbertBreer.

Diggs would certainly be a name that would turn some heads. The wide receiver is a four-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro, and would bring a reliable veteran presence to a young offense that will be run by a second-year quarterback. He was one of the most productive pass catchers in the league from 2020 through 2023 while playing for the Buffalo Bills, and is hoping to regain some of that notion with his next team.
There may be a delay, though. Diggs was traded to the Houston Texans last off-season, and hopes were high that he’d be able to elevate the stable of weapons available to CJ Stroud. But Diggs had his season cut short due to an ACL tear after just eight games, and was able to score just three touchdowns all year.
There is a good chance that his rehab will last well into training camp and potentially even longer, and could stretch all the way into the regular season. It may be one of the reasons why Diggs has gone unsigned through the first week and a half of NFL free agency.
The Patriots certainly have to do something to help themselves in the receiving department. The top options on their roster include Kayshon Boutte and Kendrick Bourne, neither of whom were able to eclipse 600 receiving yards last season.
