ESPN and the NFL announced their landmark agreement on Wednesday. ESPN will acquire several NFL Media assets, including NFL Network, in exchange for a 10% equity stake in ESPN.
One of the assets that ESPN will now control is the NFL RedZone Channel. If the new agreement is approved, ESPN will control the NFL RedZone and the right to distribute the channel to TV operators.
The most important person involved in NFL RedZone is its longtime host, Scott Hanson. Every Sunday during the NFL regular season, Hanson guides NFL fans through the day’s slate of games, showing every single touchdown.
NFL RedZone has become extremely popular with NFL fans, especially those who play fantasy football.
ESPN’s deal with the NFL will not affect the upcoming 2025 season, so Hanson will be on your televisions in the fall. However, what does the future hold for Hanson?
Thankfully, Hanson confirmed his status as the RedZone host when the program moves to ESPN platforms.
On his X account, Hanson tweeted, “It’s official. (& for those wondering: yes, I will still be hosting RedZone.) Fired up for a great season! Optimistic about this new partnership!”
Hanson’s contract expired after the 2024 season, putting his future with NFL Media in jeopardy. However, Hanson agreed to a contract extension in May and announced his return to RedZone.
Could RedZone Happen In Other Sports?
“We really, truly believe this is going to be an unbelievable experience for our fans.”

ESPN will be continuing NFL RedZone once the acquisition is approved. Because ESPN now controls RedZone, it owns that brand, meaning the network could create RedZone-esque spinoffs for other sports.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about the future of RedZone and teased the show’s future.
“It will be the NFL RedZone. I don’t think fans will see any difference to that,” Goodell told Hannah Storm on SportsCenter. “Obviously, in the context of that, though, ESPN purchased the RedZone name, and they will be able to utilize that for other sports, college football and other things, and I think that could be an exciting thing for our fans also to see a RedZone, maybe in college football or other sports. That’s something that they now own and have the ability to do that. But as far as Red Zone, NFL Red Zone, there won’t be any changes for our plans.”
If ESPN created a college football RedZone, fans would never have a reason to leave the couch on Saturdays and Sundays during football season.
