The Minnesota Vikings are spiraling through one of their most turbulent seasons in recent memory, and there is growing frustration inside wide receiver Justin Jefferson. There are both rumors and visual evidence of his unhappiness with the team’s situation, and there is a chance that he asks for a trade this coming NFL offseason.
NFL Rumors: Why Would The Vikings Trade Justin Jefferson?
Should the Vikings consider moving their superstar wideout while his value remains sky-high? Below, we take a look at three reasons why the team should at least explore the idea:
1. Sell High
Elite wide receivers have become an important commodity in the NFL, and Justin Jefferson is certainly one of them. He is a perennial Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection, has eclipsed 1,400 receiving yards in each of his healthy seasons, and is generally regarded as one of the most skilled players in the game at his position.
His value will likely never be higher. Jefferson began his NFL career at the ripe age of 21, meaning that he is still just 26 years old in his 6th season. He should currently be entering his peak prime, and has at least a handful of years of high-level production still left in his body, meaning that he’ll command a hefty return should the Vikings make him available.
Waiting around to make a decision on his future could cost Minnesota value in the long run, especially given their current and near-future quarterback issues.
2. Quarterback Issues Could Diminish Value
The 2025 season has been borderline disastrous for the Vikings, especially in the quarterback department. In Sunday’s game against the Seahawks, Jefferson had a career-worst performance (just two catches for four yards), after which he skipped post-game media, which he hadn’t done since 2022.
There has been a revolving door at quarterback for the Vikings, and not just this season. Dating back to 2023, Jefferson has caught passes from eight different quarterbacks, which hampers any attempt at building chemistry. And it doesn’t seem like there is any solution in sight, either, as JJ McCarthy has looked shaky at very best in his first season at the helm in Minnesota.
If the team does move on from McCarthy this coming offseason, then Jefferson would have to build a rapport with yet another signal caller. Should the team let the wide receiver’s prime years go to waste while they develop another QB? Or should they get the best trade value available while they can?
3. Opportunity For A “Reset”
Given his name value, past accomplishments, and still relatively recent contract, Jefferson likely remains one of the most coveted WRs in the league. Trading him could yield high-round draft picks or multiple players, which could help restock a more balanced roster. Despite the Vikings winning 13 games a season ago, they could be headed for a mini-rebuild next season, given the major current issue at the quarterback position.
Jefferson would be the team’s most valuable trade chip if they decided to go that route. It wouldn’t be an easy trade to pull off financially, given the dead money that would be placed on Minnesota’s books. But the return for his services may be too good for the team to pass up.
