It has been assumed that the Atlanta Falcons will move on from Kirk Cousins after just one season. But the 36-year-old quarterback still remains on the roster as we enter the month of June, and it appears that time may be running out on finding him a new team for the 2025 NFL season. Or perhaps Atlanta is just waiting for the right opportunity, as well as a certain date, that would help save them money on Cousins’ contract. NFL Rumors: Cousins More Likely To Be Traded After June 1st Cousins signed a lucrative deal last off-season after leaving Minnesota. Things got confusing quickly, though, as the team went out and used their top-10 draft pick in 2024 on a quarterback. Michael Penix Jr. was seen as their signal caller of the future, and became the Falcons’ starter late in the season as the team was making its final playoff push. Atlanta has seen enough to make Penix Jr. their starter going forward. That means that Cousins has become something of an expendable piece, and there have been rumors surrounding his availability all offseason. A post-June 1st trade would save them far more money than doing anything earlier, but there is an issue with waiting. Essentially all of the teams around the NFL have filled their quarterback vacancies, whether it be through free agency or the draft, leaving Cousins and the Falcons without many options. Essentially the only team that could be looking to upgrade their quarterback room at the current time is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin and company have been awaiting a decision from Aaron Rodgers, who has elongated the process of decided whether or not to retire. If Pittsburgh moves on from their pursuit of Rodgers, then trading for Cousins could be a possibility. Kirk Cousins had arguably his worst season as an NFL starter in 2024. He led the league in interceptions while playing in just 14 games, and his lowest yards per game average since 2019. The Falcons went 7-7 in his starts.
