Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier confirmed back in April that his team was actively looking to trade cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Nothing came to fruition around the time of the draft, and the former All-Pro remains on the roster.
Dolphins Are Waiting Until July 1st To Trade Jalen Ramsey
But it looks like the Dolphins are waiting for a specific date to get a deal done, at a point that would make more financial sense.
According to a report by NFL insider Cameron Wolfe, the relationship between Ramsey and the Dolphins hasn’t gotten any better. Wolfe spoke with defense coordinator Anthony Weaver, who was quoted saying that “relationships are hard, and he’s chosen to move on”.
“Relationships are hard.” Jalen Ramsey and Dolphins are in midst of a split that will likely end in a summer trade.

Wolfe laid out the reasons why there hasn’t been any movement on the situation yet. If Miami were to trade Ramsey before July 1st, his departure would result in more than $25 million in dead cap money, which would be a blow to a team without a large budget to begin with.
If a deal were to get done after July 1st, however, the Dolphins would be saving far more money. Ramsey’s dead cap hit at that point would be just $6.7 million, which would free up just shy of $10 million in cap space for the upcoming season.
Which Teams Might Trade For Ramsey?
The Dolphins are aware of which teams Jalen Ramsey would be interested in playing for, according to Wolfe. He mentioned the LA Rams specifically, the team that originally traded Ramsey to Miami, and added the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers as potential destinations.
Ramsey spent two years with the Dolphins after four seasons with the Rams, and made the Pro Bowl in 2023 despite playing in just 10 games. There were some struggles in 2024 for the 30-year-old cornerback that resulted in some of his numbers to drop, and reports of his unhappiness with the team became apparent immediately following the season.
Ramsey’s departure will create a gaping hole in Miami’s secondary, which wasn’t all that deep to begin with. Without him, the Dolphins would be slated to start some combination of Kader Kohu, Storm Duck, and Cam Smith.
