NFL Rumors: How Serious Is The Injury To Bucky Irving?

Running back Bucky Irving saw a slight dip in production during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game during NFL Week 4, and now we know why. It was revealed on Monday that the second-year player out of Oregon is dealing with a foot sprain, and his status for the upcoming weeks is very much in question.

NFL Rumors: Bucky Irving Unlikely To Play In Week 5

The injury apparently occurred in the first half of Tampa Bay’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He would remain in the game in the second half though was used sparingly, and head coach Todd Bowles revealed later that Irving would be undergoing an MRI to determine his availability.

They apparently didn’t like what they saw. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday that Irving was present at Buccaneers’ practice, but was seen using crutches and wearing a walking boot. This puts Irving’s status for Week 5 in serious question, and the team is treating the ailment on a “week-to-week” basis.

It would be a tough blow for Tampa Bay if their star running back is forced to miss an extended period of time. Through the first four games, Irving had played in 70% of the team’s offensive snaps, the third-highest of any skill position player. He has 71 carries so far on the year, with the next-highest running back on the list being Rachaad White with 23.

While his rushing yards per game average is down slightly in the early going in comparison to his rookie year, the Buccaneers have utilized him extensively in the passing game. He doesn’t have any rushing touchdowns yet, but has already caught 19 passes for 193 yards and two scores.

The Buccaneers suffered their first loss of the 2025 NFL season against the Eagles on Sunday, but they are still the top team in the NFC South at 3-1. Things won’t get any easier, though, especially if Irving is set to miss extended time. Tampa Bay’s next three games will come against teams with a combined 9-3 record, starting with a cross-country trip to Seattle to take on the Seahawks in Week 5.
