NFL Rumors: Seahawks Likely To Move On From Tyler Lockett

Wide receiver Tyler Lockett is the longest tenured player on the current roster for the Seattle Seahawks. But his 10-year career with the team that selected him in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft is likely coming to an end, as he is a likely cap casualty for the team.

Seahawks Can Save $17 Million By Releasing Tyler Lockett

Most of Lockett’s early-career contributions came on special teams. In each of the first three years of his career, he was selected to an All-Pro team, and always as a kick returner. But he became an explosive wide receiver option in 2018. He posted 8+ touchdowns in five straight seasons, eclipsing 1,000 receiving yards in four of them, and was arguably Russell Wilson’s most reliable target during the former Seahawks QB’s most productive years.

But Lockett’s production dropped significantly last year. After seeing 122 targets in 2023, he was thrown to just 74 times this past season, and he totalled fewer than 50 catches for the first time since 2017. His 600 receiving yards were the lowest in seven years as well, and his two touchdowns matched the lowest total of his career.

He became the 3rd wide receiver option, at best, as DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba commanded the bulk of the targets throughout the year.

Because of his advancing age and waning production, Seattle is likely to move on this spring. Lockett has a massive cap hit for 2025, and would save $17 million by releasing him before March 16th, when a $5.3 million roster bonus is owed.

Where would Lockett end up if he is released? One of the destinations that would make the most sense is Las Vegas. His old coach Pete Carroll is now manning the ship for the Raiders, who lack talent at the wide receiver position. It would make for a seamless transition for the 32-year-old Lockett, as he would see many of the same concepts that he did during his time with the Seahawks.
