With the NFL trade deadline less than a week away, the Philadelphia Eagles are sending wide receiver John Metchie III to the New York Jets for cornerback Michael Carter II.

Full Details of Trade Between Eagles and Jets

The trades have begun.

Per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Eagles are sending Metchie and a 2027 sixth-round selection to the Jets for Carter and a 2027 seventh-round pick.

In 2024, Carter signed a three-year, $30.75 million extension to become the highest-paid slot corner at the time. Carter is under contract through 2027.

To make the trade official, Carter agreed to remove the $5 million guaranteed for injury in his 2026 contract year.

What This Trade Means for the Eagles and Jets

The Philadelphia Eagles have been searching for a third cornerback to play with Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Adoree’ Jackson and Kelee Ringo have been inconsistent contributors in the secondary.

Jackson also suffered a concussion in the Week 8 win against the Giants.

Since signing the contract in 2024, Carter has struggled to stay on the field. Carter missed four games last season with a back injury, and he has missed three games this year with a concussion.

Carter has 223 total tackles, two interceptions, and 26 passes defensed in 65 games. Now, Carter will likely play the nickel spot in Vic Fangio’s defense.

For New York, they get a player in Metchie, who has struggled to make an impact with the Eagles. Metchie has four receptions for 18 yards in seven games this season.

In 2022, Metchie notably sat out his rookie season for the Houston Texans to battle leukemia. Metchie made his NFL debut the following season.

In August, the Texans traded Metchie and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Eagles for tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick.

Metchie is in the final year of his rookie contract.

Metchie joins a New York Jets receiving corps searching for answers after Garrett Wilson, who leads the team in receptions (36), yards (395), and touchdowns (4). Wilson has missed the past two games with a knee injury.

Outside of Wilson, the Jets have been searching for a No. 2 wide receiver. Josh Reynolds, who has 11 receptions, is on injured reserve. Tyler Johnson, who has 10 catches, has not been much better.

Tight end Mason Taylor and running backs Breece Hall and Isaiah Davis have been the Jets’ leading pass catchers outside of Wilson.

The Eagles (6-2) and Jets (1-7) are on byes in Week 9.
