Novak Djokovic celebrates first round victory

Novak Djokovic has issued a challenge to Serena Williams to return to the tennis circuit in 2026.

Speaking after his first round victory over Learner Tien at the U.S. Open, Djokovic was asked about Williams’ speech introducing Maria Sharapova to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Djokovic praised the speech wholeheartedly as well as how nice it was to see Williams in and around tennis once again. As a result, he found the moment as a perfect opportunity to invite Williams to be more involved.

“Seeing Serena in any shape or form around tennis is great, we miss her,” Djokovic said. “She still hasn’t officially retired, so, I invite her. I challenge her because she’s such a great competitor so when somebody challenges her, she never refuses.

“I challenge Serena, come back on the tour next year.”

Djokovic said it with a smile, possibly knowing it’s more in jest than anything. Perhaps he’s missing having players from around his generation on the tour.

When Djokovic says that Williams hasn’t officially retired, he’s referencing Williams’ announcement via Vogue that she was stepping away from tennis. Williams said she doesn’t like the world retirement and so was “evolving away from tennis.”

Djokovic Shares Overall Thoughts On Williams’ Tribute To Sharapova

Before he issued the challenge, Djokovic was effusive in his praise of the special Hall of Fame moment shared between two great rivals.

“It was surprising but a very nice gesture from Serena to be there for Maria,” Djokovic said. “They had some really intense rivalry and incredible matches over the years. They said it, they were honest, Serena I think mentioned people would probably think about Serena as one of the last people who would be there to introduce.

“At the same time, as she said in her speech, she beautifully, eloquently explained that people thought they’re miles apart in their differences but they were actually very much the same in terms of they wanted the same thing and competed on the tour for so many years.

“It was great, it was a wonderful moment and I think Maria deserves it. Obviously, an incredible champion and icon off the court as well with her brand and everything she has built over the years.”
