Olympic Champion Qinwen Zheng Withdraws From Next Week’s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

Chinese tennis star and World No. 8-ranked player, Qinwen Zheng, is the latest and most surprising withdrawal from the upcoming WTA 500 Porsche Grand Prix clay court tournament, slated to begin on Monday, April 14 in Stuttgart, Germany.
Zheng was a quarterfinalist at last week’s Credit One Charleston Open. Going into the European clay court season, Zheng is believed to be a player to watch given her success at Roland Garros last summer at the Paris Olympics, where she earned the women’s singles gold medal.
No reason is provided for her withdrawal; however, fans have noticed that Zheng has been wearing a sleeve on her serving arm in recent matches. Theories about the condition of her forearm and elbow are circulating on the internet.
Hopefully, Zheng gets the rest she needs to rejoin the WTA Tour as it heads to Roland Garros. She is a fan-favorite everywhere she goes and had many cheering for her last week in Charleston, South Carolina.
Qinwen Zheng Is One Of Several Noteworthy Withdrawals
In addition to Zheng, Ons Jabeur and Barbora Krejcikova have withdrawn from the tournament. Jabeur has suffered from chronic injuries in the past couple of years, limiting her time on court. Her game is unique and fun to watch on all surfaces. Krejcikova, the 2024 Wimbledon Champion, has yet to play in 2025 after suffering a back injury at the end of last year.

Amanda Anisimova suffered a back injury in Charleston that forced her to retire from her semifinal match against Sofia Kenin. Her Stuttgart status is unknown.
Paula Badosa continues to deal with her chronic back injury and has missed the spring tournaments. It is unclear when she will rejoin the WTA Tour, but we have seen social media photos of her practicing on a clay court, which is a positive sign.

At some point during the clay court season, we hope to see Marketa Vondrousova (injured arm/shoulder) and 2019 US Open Champion Bianca Andreescu (appendectomy) return; it remains to be seen if that will occur in Stuttgart next week.
