Heading into Patriots training camp, Brissett was QB1, with Maye as his backup.
Brissett is a nine-year veteran who has started 48 career NFL games. Brissett signed a one-year, $8 million contract this offseason to serve as a bridge quarterback for the Patriots.
The Patriots selected Maye with the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. With Maye, the physical intangibles—6’4″ and 225 pounds—are there. The 21-year-old has middle-of-the-road experience, starting 26 games at North Carolina in three seasons.
Will Mayo choose the crafty veteran or promising rookie to start Week 1? Whoever wins the job will have to earn it.
“For me, we always talk about competition, and that’s at all spots,” Mayo recently told reporters. “Even if Drake beats out Jacoby, he earned out that role.”
Mayo added, “If he’s [Maye] better than Jacoby, he’ll play. He’ll start.”

After playing one series in the Patriots’ preseason opener, Maye received more playing time in the team’s 14-13 preseason loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday.
Maye took advantage of the opportunity and made Mayo’s decision at QB more difficult.
In four series, Maye finished 6-of-11 for 47 yards with a 4-yard rushing touchdown. The highlight of Maye’s night was a play that didn’t count. Maye threw a beautiful deep strike to wide receiver Javon Baker, who dropped the catchable pass.
Brissett played three against the Eagles and finished 3-of-7 for 17 yards. However, Brissett threw a terrible interception in the end zone.
After the game, Mayo told reporters that Brissett and Maye would play in the Patriots’ preseason finale against the Washington Commanders on August 25.
