Philadelphia Flyers Radio Announcer Tim Saunders Suspended After Hot Mic Comment

It is a tale as old as time; a hot mic comment makes the news. A media person makes a comment unaware that he or she is live and still on the air.

Philadelphia Flyers radio announcer Tim Saunders is the latest victim. His sexually explicit comment was uttered during what he thought was a commercial break, and he has been in hot water ever since.

As a result, the Flyers suspended his station, 97.5 The Fanatic, for two games in a statement that apologized to listeners and said the matter was being addressed with the parties involved.

What Did Tim Saunders Say?

Though it was not derogatory toward anyone, it was inappropriate and especially confusing for young listeners.

Here is the audio.

Is This An Overreaction?

Some would argue that as hot mic comments go, this was not among the worst listeners have heard.

Last November at the end of the season, Tennis Channel’s Jon Wertheim made a hot mic comment, unaware that he was still on-air, about Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova’s appearance. As a result, Wertheim was suspended indefinitely but returned to air without fanfare at the beginning of the next season in January.

Regarding the Saunders comment, Flyers beat writer Charlie O’Connor said:

“Obviously Tim Saunders made a mistake here (hot mics, they can get you), but I know the Flyers radio guys well enough to know they’re constantly ragging on each other good naturedly. I imagine that’s what happened here. Don’t think anyone should think less of him.”

It seems inevitable that a media person will be caught on air making a hot mic comment not intended for the public. Saunders is just the latest example.
