Pittsburgh Lands On Wrong Side Of NFL Playoff History After Loss To Texans

To wrap up the divisional round of the 2026 NFL playoffs, the #5 seed Texans were on the road to face the #4-seeded Steelers. It was 7-6 at halftime, and the Steelers were trying to stay competitive.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the score was still 7-6. However, the Texans went on to score 23 unanswered points in the final quarter and win 30-6. For Pittsburgh, it was another crushing defeat in the postseason, something the city has seen too often. The Steelers have lost seven consecutive playoff games. That is the longest active playoff losing streak in the NFL.

What can Pittsburgh do to overcome years of playoff losses piling up?

In 2025, Pittsburgh beat Baltimore in Week 18. That won the Steelers the AFC North division title for the first time since 2020. Additionally, the Steelers finished with a winning record for the 19th consecutive season under head coach Mike Tomlin. It’s that type of consistency that kept him in the same posistion for nearly two decades. After winning the division, the Steelers earned the #4 seed in the 2026 AFC playoffs.

The Steelers hosted the #5 seed Texans on Monday evening. Pittsburgh had a massive challenge on its hands, facing one of the league’s top defensive units. Houston allowed a league-low 16.7 points per game to their oppoents in 2025. They took their defense to another level on Monday against the Steelers, holding Pittsburgh to just six points. Additionally, the Texans pitched a shutout in the second half.

After the 30-6 loss to the Texans, Pittsburgh was on the wrong side of NFL playoff history. The Steelers have not won an NFL playoff game since 2016. They’ve had six chances since 2016 to win in the postseason but have failed to capitalize. Additionally, the Steelers have lost each of their last five playoff games by double-digit points. What needs to change for the Steelers to get over their playoff hump?

On top of that, the Steelers have lost seven consecutive playoff games. That is the longest active drought in the NFL. Pittsburgh is approaching the Lions’ record of nine straight playoff losses. The Steelers have a standard in the regular season, and that’s been proven time and time again. However, the team has failed to have any success as of late in the postseason. Would the team ever think about parting ways with head coach Mike Tomlin? Pittsburgh’s front office will have to ask that question and more about what’s next for the future of the franchise.
